We are not in John’s storytelling company long before we realize that he is not nearly as interested in telling us anything new about Jesus (although he also does plenty of that along the way) as he is in drawing us into an increasingly intimate relationship with Jesus. “Believe” and “love” are the characteristic verbs; neither can be accomplished in a hurry.
