Secret Wish

Perhaps
it’s the secret wish
of every soul struggling in the middle
of what he did not plan
and did not choose.

Perhaps
it is the silent cry
of each of us
as we are forced to deal
with someone
who is difficult to love.

Perhaps
we all think that
we’re wiser thane we really are
and more benevolent
than we would actually be.

Perhaps
we all forget that
sin has reduced us to fools
and shrunk our field of interest
to the size of our own needs.

Perhaps
that’s why all of us
secretly wish to be
sovereign.

Broken-Down House, Paul David Tripp, p. 48.
