Evil as a Negative Thing

Wrestling with the problem of evil, Augustine sought to define evil in purely negative terms. Evil is a lack, privation (privatio), or negation (negatio) of the good.

This winter we're getting a lot of privation of heat.

Cold is where heat is lacking;
darkness is where light is missing;
and evil is where good is absent.
